My opinion is that he has a really scary and fun life because he always has to fight crime and go on adventures. A secret clue, that his father has left, leads Max to the inhospitable wilderness of Namibia and the discovery of a potential massive ecological disaster masterminded by the very powerful and completely ruthless businessman, Shaka Chang. Max is aided with the help of Koga, a local bushmen, who has a very keen sense of the wild; Kallie van Reenen, a local girl who has a great knowledge of planes and the sky; and his best mate back in England. Where he luckily escapes the grasp of death. Adventure takes you into the African wilderness with crocodiles and lions, running away from assassins and following the clues to a secret location and unearthing a deadly plot.
This school is not far from a active war zone in which max has to walk through to get to his house. While the author did a great job building up the book with lots of suspense, I did find parts of the story to be very predictable and not that interesting. Max is determined to find him whatever dangers may lay in his path. This book was full of action, and fit the description for mystery amazingly. That makes for a lot of jumping around, even within scenes, and whenever it happens the story turns rather clunky.

His father is assumed dead. The narrative is pretty awesome in its ridiculousness, which is why I want to finish it.

Max follows the clues and in Namibia he finds out that the whole of Namibia in in danger. Dartmoor isn't a normal boys' school. Max is nearly killed many times in the book; he actually dies only once. Koga recognizes that the lions had brought it down, and they run but not after Max trips and alerts the lions. Gilman is rather obviously accustomed to writing scripts for television shows. I still think the second book, Ice Claw, was the most intriguing one with the last book a close second.
